Job Description: Orientation and Mobility Specialist

Department: Service Department

General Summary

Under general supervision, the Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist provides intensive, one-to-one individualized training with the goal of independent travel on Fixed Route services. Responsible for teaching a wide range of travel skills in the field, including trip planning, street crossing, bus familiarization, map and schedule reading, and emergency and safety skills on public transportation.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Completes in-person assessment and updates individual’s eligibility for independent travel based on assessment.
  • Develops a personalized plan of instruction for passenger based on ability level and travel goals.
  • Provides one-on-one, or, where appropriate, group field training.
  • Conducts follow-up with individuals following training.
  • Completes a brief, timely, final report on training outcomes.
  • Assists with trip planning and general orientation to a specific route.
  • Confirms ADA compliance of wheelchair ramps and safe path of travel at home or at trip destination.
  • Establishes collaborative relationships with other transit providers and other local travel training professionals.
  • Communicates with guardian, power of attorney, family, or the support network of the passenger.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Sociology, Public Administration or related field.
  • Certification through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals, the National Blindness Professional Certification Board or a similarly regarded organization.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working with people with disabilities.
  • Travel training experience preferred.
  • Experience in interviewing and providing ongoing assessment of customers with various types of disabilities.
  • Knowledge of ADA regulations and sensitivity to issues relating to people with disabilities.
  • Familiarity with the public transit system preferred.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel applications.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to interact and communicate with individuals with disabilities and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Ability to work flexible hours in all weather conditions and adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
