Job Description

As STOP’s leader, the CEO serves as the voice of the organization and is responsible for leading a wide range of activities that address and enrich the interests/concerns of STOP’s major constituencies—consumers, food industry alliances, policymakers, and other partners. Combining inspirational leadership and sophisticated management abilities, the CEO will advance the organization in terms of culture, capability, processes, and impact. The CEO will inspire innovation and ensure that STOP continues to be well-positioned to advance its mission.

Major areas of focus include:

  • Strategic Planning & Execution with board of directors
  • Leading STOP policy initiatives
  • Consumer engagement (via social media and other news outlets)
  • External affairs/food industry relations and academic partnerships
  • General daily business operations

Areas of Responsibility

Executive Leadership and Organizational Management

  • Provide thoughtful and visionary executive leadership that is inclusive, transparent, and empowering.
  • Seek out opportunities to share with STOP’s board when it comes to Continuous Improvement for the organization.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization and ensure its overall successful long-term operations.
  • Conduct strategic decision-making through utilization of performance metrics, innovative thinking and horizon scanning.
  • Foster a culture to encourage collaboration between staff members, recognize positive contributions, and enable professional growth/development.
  • Manage and motivate staff, overseeing processes such as hiring, separation, ongoing staff development, performance management, and compensation and benefits.
  • Inspire a business-oriented, professional, results-driven environment across the organization.
  • Perform general management duties overseeing the day-to-day operations of the organization.
  • Establish goals, objectives, and operational plans in collaboration with the Board, staff, and other leaders.

Board Governance

  • Maintain effective, regular and ongoing communication with the Board, ensuring awareness and transparency regarding STOP’s status/operations/issues/challenges.
  • Provide monthly, effective and timely communications/reports that enable board members to fulfill their governance and stewardship responsibilities.
  • Attend all Board meetings and provide reports and updates on current work, project timelines, and project and organizational progress.
  • Diplomatically manage the Board as needed to build consensus, remind of outstanding deliverables, and request or offer support, as needed.
  • Work closely and openly with the Board and its committees.

Development and Fundraising

  • Develop and drive fundraising in collaboration with the Board as needed.
  • Initiate, cultivate, and extend relationships with the organization’s portfolio of individual and corporate supporters.
  • Steward all of STOP’s current financial donors.
  • Champion efforts to develop new sources of funding through individual donations, corporate and foundation grants.

Financial Management and Administration

  • Provide guided oversight of the administrative and operational functions of the organization in accordance with the mission, objectives, and policies.
  • Prudently direct resources and manage all financials within budget guidelines and according to current laws and regulations.
  • Assume fiduciary responsibility for the fiscal integrity of the organization.
  • Build and administer the annual board approved budget.
  • Monitor budget and manage daily financial operations to ensure maximum utilization of resources and optimum financial positioning for the organization.
  • Ensure maximum resource utilization, budget management, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.

External Relations and Communications

  • Serve as chief spokesperson and represent the organization at public events, conferences, and partnership meetings.
  • Approach and influence media, with authority, with developed key messages in a proactive and affirmative manner.
  • Present and promote the organization and its mission, programs, partners, and members in a consistently positive manner.
  • Ensure high visibility to prospects and the public and build interest in engaged philanthropy.
  • Manage all aspects of the organization’s marketing and public relations.
  • Actively foster new relationships and cultivate relationships with existing external partners.

Skills/Experience

Experience

  • Experience in a senior leadership position (preferably CEO or executive director), within the food or food-related sector at a nonprofit, foundation, food company or government agency.
  • Strong business acumen and a history of providing visionary leadership at the executive level.
  • Expertise in food safety, public policy and public health aligned to the mission of Stop Foodborne Illness.
  • Proven experience executing organization growth and leading a similar- or larger-size successful nonprofit and/or related entity.
  • Proven experience working with a governing nonprofit Board.
  • Adept working with diverse groups of people.
  • Familiarity with diverse business functions such as accounting/finance, marketing, public relations, human resources, etc.
  • Experience and success in motivating, recruiting, developing, retaining, and mentoring high performance, mission-driven, and results-oriented teams.
  • Excellent written, oral, interpersonal and public speaking skills.
  • Persuasive and passionate communicator with strong interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study, preferably an advanced degree.
